The Heritage of The Natural Wood Floor Company

The history and heritage of The Natural Wood Floor Company has been one of progressive steps in the wood flooring industry that shows a long-term commitment to quality and care for wood and the environment.

Providing wood flooring to London

We have been selling wood floors since the early 1990s and haven’t looked back. Since the 90s, flooring has come a long way and we have been at the forefront of the industry. Read our story below.

1990s

Operating out of a small shed in Balham, London, The Natural Wood Floor Company began to supply reclaimed and re-manufactured wood floors sourced from many old buildings in the UK, which were being demolished or refurbished at the time.

As the company grew, we started to source different types of wood flooring, purchasing new Oak and Maple wood floors from Canada and America. As the flooring market grew, new species and products were added and we began to export further afield, to Germany and Japan.

With interest in flooring still growing, particularly in solid Oak hardwood floors in wide and long boards, we invested in a new high-tech factory in the UK. At the same time, we started to produce fresh sawn products in Romania, close to Europe’s second largest Oak forest.

2000s

We created the UK’s first 6 coat pre-finishing line designed for wood floors using UV energy, which creates a long-lasting, durable wear surface with no harmful gases emitted during or after the process.

Our production facilities in Romania were expanded and in keeping with our high environmental standards, we started to use solvent-free waxes in production. With more than 2 million square metres of flooring sold, we started to make kitchen worktops to compliment the flooring production. We began to manufacture and stock our own engineered wood flooring to satisfy the high specification required for under floor heating. Bio fuel was beginning to be used to kiln dry 100% of our products as we reached 0% waste from wood production. Exports of bio fuels grew to include Germany, Hungary, and Italy.

Our factory in Romania had become Europe’s largest producer of solid Oak kitchen worktops. We switched the plywood used in our engineered floors from Beech to Birch, which is a more stable and robust species.

2010s

With investment in new machinery, we could produce a higher quality and more precisely manufactured product. The key element of flooring, which are the tongues and grooves, are now produced to the highest European standard using diamond tooling.

The introduction of formaldehyde-free PUR adhesives vastly improved the bonding of the top layer to the plywood in the manufacturing of our engineered products. We became the largest importers of Walnut in Europe with worktops, furniture, and flooring exported to all corners of the globe.

All of our materials come from sustainable sources, with FSC and other fully accredited certifications available for all wood products. Huge investments in the Romanian factory continued to improve the yields with thin cutting technology, using the thinnest saw blades in the world.
